Boston Globe Media has acquired Boston Magazine from a Philadelphia-based publisher, adding to a regional newsroom portfolio that includes The Boston Globe, Boston.com, and STAT News.
Globe Media CEO Linda Henry announced Wednesday that the publishing company acquired Boston Magazine from Metro Corp, which also publishes Philadelphia Magazine. All employees of Boston Magazine received offers to stay in their positions, according to a statement, and existing subscriptions will “transfer seamlessly.” The sum of the transaction was not disclosed.
Boston Magazine, known for its long form journalism, lifestyle and food coverage, and Best of Boston editions is more than 55 years old. Numerous local publications, including the Boston Phoenix, the Improper Bostonian, and the Cambridge Chronicle, have folded in recent years.
“As so many other iconic publications that once shaped our city have faded away, we feel an immense responsibility to honor and preserve Boston Magazine’s legacy,” Henry said in a statement. “This is not just about sustaining a magazine – it’s about strengthening a cornerstone of Boston’s identity and ensuring its stories continue to inspire, connect, and resonate with our community for generations to come.”
David Lipson, CEO of Metro Corp, inherited the magazine from his father, D. Herbert Lipson, who died in 2017. The elder Lipson bought it from the city’s chamber of commerce in 1970 after finding success with Philadelphia Magazine, David said in a statement.
“It is very gratifying to know the magazine is in the hands of a family and organization with a significant commitment to Boston and journalism,” David Lipson said in a statement. “I believe that both the staff and the magazine have a wonderful opportunity for growth.”
While the Globe is one of the few profitable regional newspapers in the country, the paper has reported, Globe Media laid off 11 employees at STAT News in December.
According to a 2022 press kit, Boston Magazine’s circulation at the time was 65,000. In 2024, Globe Media reported their products had 16 million unique monthly visitors.
“Current Boston Magazine subscribers can continue to enjoy the high-quality journalism and storytelling that they have come to expect,” Dhiraj Nayar, president of Globe Media, said in a statement. “In the months ahead, we will work towards enhancing the print and digital experience, ensuring it remains a trusted voice for the city.”
