Worcester man pleads guilty to stabbing woman to death in 2019

“We know nothing can bring Jennifer back to her family, but we hope today’s plea brings some measure of justice to her family.”

A 42-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the 2019 murder of a woman in her Worcester apartment, officials announced on Monday.

Thomas Bergstrom of Worcester was sentenced to serve life in prison after pleading guilty to the second-degree murder charge against him in the killing of Jennifer Vazquez-Rivera, the Worcester County District Attorney’s office said in a statement. Bergstrom was given the possibility of parole after 25 years.

Vazquez-Rivera was found stabbed in her apartment on Lapierre Street in Worcester on Oct. 2, 2019. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, and officials said witness statements and cell phone evidence led investigators to Bergstrom.

The Worcester man turned himself into police on Oct. 4, 2019 and has been in custody since.

The DA’s office said Vazquez-Rivera’s family was in favor of the guilty plea to avoid having her two children, who are minors, participate in the murder trial.

“We know nothing can bring Jennifer back to her family, but we hope today’s plea brings some measure of justice to her family to help them move forward after this tragedy,” Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early said in a statement.
