Homeless man in Quincy likely died from smoke after fire in his minivan, fire officials say

The man, who was not identified, is the third homeless person to die as a result of fire this year, state officials said.

A man sleeping in his car in Quincy died from apparent smoke inhalation on Christmas Eve after blankets caught fire in his minivan, officials said.

The man, who was not publicly identified but was in his 30s, was found unresponsive by a friend around 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 24 near 45 Morrison St., the state Department of Fire Services announced Monday.

The man, who is believed to have been homeless and sleeping in his car, was declared dead at the scene, officials said. His cause of death has not yet been determined, but investigators said he may have died from smoke inhalation.

State police and local agencies are investigating the fire and the man’s death. There was heavy smoke damage, minor fire damage, and burned blankets inside the minivan, DFS said. The fire apparently self-extinguished.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but officials said they found cigarette butts “in the same area.”

DFS said the man is the third homeless person to die as a result of a fire this year. A woman in Somerville died earlier this month, and a woman in Millbury died after a brush fire in October.
