The Burlington Fire and Police Departments responded to a house fire early Sunday morning where they evacuated a resident who later died as a result of his injuries, officials said.
The fire took place around 4 a.m. A passerby called 911, and first responders soon arrived at the home at 16 Evelyn St. There, they found “heavy fire” coming from the roof, which had already partially collapsed, according to a joint release from Fire Chief Andrew Connerty and Police Chief Thomas Browne.
“Firefighters battled the fire for about 40 minutes before bringing it under control,” officials said. “They remained on scene throughout the morning, extinguishing hot spots.”
The unconscious resident who was pulled out of the one-story, one-family house by a Burlington police officer was transported to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington. Identified as Paul Spencer, 60, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation, authorities said.
