Firefighters in Spencer worked through freezing conditions Sunday as they battled a large fire that destroyed two homes and damaged a third. Exploding propane tanks and fireworks made the situation even more dangerous.
One building on East Avenue was completely consumed by flames by the time first responders arrived. Firefighters from multiple nearby towns were all called to help.
The occupants of all the buildings were safe and there were no injuries, according to fire officials in Paxton and Leicester.
“Unfortunately two of our families from town lost everything tonight,” Spencer Fire and Emergency Services wrote in a Facebook post. “Despite the very frigid conditions firefighters from several communities tried their best to save the two exposures. The main home was gone when we pulled up and tried to save the other two.”
There is no word on how the fire started. Officials from the Spencer Fire Department did not return requests for information Monday.
Paul Shea, a freelance photographer, was on the scene. He captured video showing fireworks exploding amid the blaze.
There were no accessible fire hydrants nearby, so crews had so use portable pumps to draw water from nearby Thompson Pond, Shea said in a Facebook post.
