Police in Lakeville have determined what led to about 80 Amazon packages being discovered abandoned in a wooded area Sunday morning.
While on a routine patrol at about 2 a.m., Sgt. Shawn Robert spotted the packages in the woods near 63 Bedford St., police said in a release. Three “large totes” full of packages were found unattended several feet into the woods. Police said the road leads to an industrial site.
Officers loaded the packages into a pickup truck and brought them back to the Lakeville Police Department. Officers contacted a local Amazon distribution center in Middleborough and returned the packages there.
On Monday afternoon, Lakeville police released a statement announcing that an Amazon driver visited the department earlier in the day and “reported that they left the packages on the side of the road at about 7 p.m. on Saturday because they were stressed.”
Police are not seeking any criminal charges against the driver, who plans to report the incident to their manager, according to the statement.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed Monday that all the orders involved are being reprocessed and redelivered.
“I would like to commend Sgt. Shawn Robert for his discovery of these unattended packages while on routine patrol,” Chief Matthew Perkins said in a statement. “Sgt. Robert likely saved a Christmas headache for many local residents by noticing these totes and getting them back to Amazon, hopefully in time for a holiday delivery.”
