Alleged drunk driver rear-ends State Police cruiser, injures trooper on Storrow Drive

Police said the driver, Melvin Lopez, was allegedly driving drunk.

A car traveling on Storrow Drive rear-ended a State Police cruiser on Monday, injuring a trooper, State Police said.

The 2013 Acura SUV was driving eastbound on Storrow Drive near Kenmore Square when it struck the police car just after 11 p.m. Both the SUV and the cruiser sustained “significant damage,” police said.

The trooper sustained injuries that were not life threatening, according to the statement.

State police said they arrested the driver, identified as Melvin Lopez, 32, of Chelsea. He faces one charge of operating under the influence of alcohol, one charge of possessing an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, and one count of negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

According to court records, Lopez pleaded not guilty in Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday. Judge Stephen Key set Lopez’s bail at $500 and ordered the suspect to refrain from alcohol, records show. Lopez is due back in court on Feb. 11. Representation for Lopez did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
