Small drone found at Nantucket airport as local sightings continue

Residents also reported sightings in Abington, south of Boston, while police said their own officers saw drones above their station.

A small drone was reportedly found at an airfield in Nantucket Sunday morning, while residents in Abington reported multiple drone sightings Sunday night.

Airport Manager Noah Karberg said a small multi-rotor device was found at the airfield at Nantucket Memorial Airport around 7:30 a.m., the Inquirer and Mirror reported. The drone was reported to the FAA and the TSA, and federal agencies will lead the investigation.

The drone weighed just over half a pound, and if used recreationally, may not require FAA registration, the Inquirer and Mirror reported. Previously, two men were arrested near Logan Airport for allegedly flying drones near airspace.

South of Boston, multiple residents in Abington took to Facebook to report drone sightings Sunday evening, according to screenshots shared with Boston.com. Abington Police Chief John Bonney confirmed that their officers saw drones near the police station on Central Street.

The drone sightings come as the large number of mysterious small unmanned aircrafts reported over New Jersey and the East Coast has gone unexplained.

The FBI said Monday that more than 5,000 of people have reported drone sightings, though officials have said there is no indication of a threat to public safety.

“We’re monitoring the situation closely,” Governor Maura Healey said on X Saturday afternoon. “Mass State Police is working together with local and federal partners, and they’re prepared to support federal authorities with jurisdiction over airspace.”
