A police officer in Fitchburg shot a man who was making “suicidal statements” and allegedly pointed his gun at the officer on Sunday, Fitchburg police said.
Fitchburg police received a 911 call reporting a man with a firearm walking towards Lunenburg Street around 9:21 a.m. on Dec. 15, the department said. Mayor Sam Squailia added to the Fitchburg police statement, saying the man was “making suicidal statements by means of a firearm.”
When the officer found the subject, police said, he left his police car in an attempt to “deescalate the situation.”
“Moments later the subject pointed a firearm directly at the officer,” police said. “The officer discharged his department issued firearm, striking the subject.”
Police said the officer “immediately” started to give the man medical aid. The wounded man was “stable” at the scene, police said. First responders took him to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition, Fitchburg police said.
The officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave, Fitchburg police said. Police said he has been an officer for two years.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, police said.
