Fire departments in Chelsea, Winthrop, and East Boston have received several complaints from residents who are being inundated with an unpleasant odor.
Residents described the pungent smell as being similar to gas, but its origin is a mystery, according to an NECN report.
“You can’t miss it. You know that you’re smelling something. It’s not fresh clean air that you’re breathing in and it does more harm I would say than anything,” former Chelsea resident Ashleigh Rossetti told the news outlet.
Fire officials in Chelsea initially said the odor was wafting from a former Exxon facility in Everett, which has been known to generate foul smells. Boston-based real estate company The Davis Companies, along with fuel company Global Partners, are currently cleaning up the 100-tank site for redevelopment.
The companies released the following statement regarding odors in the area: “We are actively remediating the former fuel storage site in Everett’s Lower Broadway District to transform it into a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood. Periodic odors from this remediation work are to be expected and pose no threat to the community. Public safety is our top priority, and we continue to work closely with city and state officials to adhere to all proper monitoring procedures on-site.”
However, Everett Fire Chief Joe Hickey told NECN that the former Exxon site is not the cause of the current odor issue.
“At times when they do disrupt the soil, there is some type of odor,” Hickey told NECN. “We don’t have any readings and we do have a detail on this site and we haven’t had any odors.”
