Thirteen students and a bus driver were rescued Wednesday afternoon in Connecticut after power lines brought down by high winds trapped them inside the school bus.
The wires came down on the school bus around 4:02 p.m. on Maple Avenue West in Higganum, according to the Haddam fire officials. The 13 students and driver were told to remain on the bus as the fire department blocked off the road. Eversource responded to the scene to secure the power and remove the wire from the bus.
“Once the area was deemed safe, the students were transported to Silver Springs Drive where they could meet their parents,” officials said.
The fire department did not report any injuries from the incident.
Fire officials left the area around 5:30 p.m., but the department said Eversource remained on the scene.
The incident was the third involving a powerline on Wednesday in Haddam, officials said.
High winds and heavy rains from Wednesday’s stormy weather caused thousands of power outages in Massachusetts.
