A 44-year-old Boston man was arrested after allegedly ramming his vehicle into a State Police cruiser before fleeing the scene, officials said Tuesday.
Just after 8 p.m. on Friday, police deployed a tracking device on a vehicle that failed to stop in Boston, according to a statement from the Massachusetts State Police.
Star Chase tracking devices are currently being piloted by the State Police with the “goal of de-escalating and avoiding dangerous pursuits” of “individuals who evade police on the roads and could do further harm in the community,” the statement said.
Using the device, troopers found the vehicle on Thwing Street in Boston — a dead end near the Jackson Square Orange Line station.
As a trooper approached the vehicle, the suspect rammed his vehicle into the police cruiser several times before fleeing on foot, authorities said. The trooper operating the affected cruiser was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation.
After the driver, later identified as Keion Rowell, allegedly drove his vehicle into the State Police cruiser, officials uncovered “trafficking weight” narcotic evidence from the scene and identified the suspect, the statement said.
Rowell was arrested in connection with the incident and charged with trafficking in cocaine, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, driving with a suspended license, and leaving the scene of a crash causing personal injury, according to police.
Local, state, and federal law enforcement worked together to find and apprehend Rowell in Randolph, Massachusetts.
