Students have until Friday to enter Mass. snowplow naming contest. These were last year’s winners.

Some 2023 winning names include "Luke Snowalker," "Blizzard of Oz," and "Plower Ranger."

It is officially winter in Massachusetts, which means it’s time for the third annual Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s “Name a Snowplow” competition.

Massachusetts teachers have until 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13 to submit their student’s best names for the 12 MassDOT snowplows that will be in service for the 2024/2025 winter season, the department said.

“The purpose of the contest is to celebrate the snow and ice season and to help recognize the hard work and dedication shown by public works employees and contractors during the winter season,” MassDOT said.

A panel of MassDOT employees will pick two winning names from classrooms in each of the six Highway Division districts. Submissions will be evaluated based on grade level group: kindergarten through fourth grade, and fifth grade through eighth grade, the department said.

MassDOT said they will award each of the 12 winning classrooms with a $100 gift card for school supplies and an invite to attend the snowplow unveiling ceremony.

Winning names will be announced on Friday, Dec. 20, MassDOT said. To submit a name, teachers can go to MassDOT’s website to fill out a form with the snowplow name and other contact information.
