One person died following a car fire on Route 3 in Billerica early Monday morning, police said.
Massachusetts State Police said they responded to a car fire with “possible entrapment” just after midnight on Monday on Route 3 north, before Trebel Cove Road.
Troopers found that no one was trapped inside the vehicle, but one person was struck and “seriously injured,” State Police said. A preliminary investigation led by State Police determined that a car crashed and caught fire. When the driver exited the car, State Police said, they believe a vehicle struck them in the left travel lane.
Billerica authorities responded to the scene to treat the victim, MSP said. The injured person died on the scene, police said. Officials shut down Route 3 until around 4 a.m., according to MSP.
State police offered their condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased driver. Police said they will not release the identity of the deceased until “appropriate notifications” are made.
