Thinking about bringing home a new best friend just in time for the holidays? This weekend could be the perfect time.

The MSPCA-Angell and several of its Massachusetts Animal Shelter Support coalition partners are hosting a fee-waived “Home for the Holidays” adoptathon through Sunday for all dogs ages 1 and older.

Whether you’re looking for a new walking buddy or a fellow couch potato, the adoption centers have dogs with varying personalities that could meet a range of lifestyles.

The adoptathon, which kicked off Thursday, includes all four MSPCA Adoption CentersWorcester Animal Rescue LeagueBerkshire Humane Society, and Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center, as well as non-coalition partners Lowell Humane Society and Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton.

“This time of year often elicits feelings of love, joy, and warmth for people—all things we really want the animals in our shelters to experience as well,” said Mike Keiley, MSPCA-Angell vice president of animal protection, in a statement.

Though people often narrow their search to puppies, Keiley hopes people will consider adopting older dogs as well, which he notes can come with “tons of benefits.”

“We’re hoping that this adoptathon helps shine the spotlight on them, and finds them the loving homes they deserve—just in time for the holidays!” he said.

Such benefits of older dogs, as detailed on the MSPCA’s website, could include that they are already housebroken or may have some previous training, so the transition could be smoother into a new home.

The event is taking place earlier in the holiday season this year with the hope that these dogs will have more time to settle in “before the hustle and bustle of the holidays really gets going,” Keiley added.

The participating shelters have set a goal to rehome at least 100 dogs, he noted.

“It’s a lofty goal in just four days,” Keiley said. “So, we’re sending out a call to everyone in the area: If you’ve been considering adding a dog to your home, please come talk to us!”

“Our adoption counselors will sit with you, talk through the process, and can then match you with the perfect pup for your lifestyle, if you decide to move forward,” he said.
