A Middleborough man who was rescued from a house fire on Monday has died from the injuries he sustained in the blaze, officials said on Wednesday.
Nathaniel Williams, 67, was pulled from his burning home on Locust Street by firefighters on Monday night and taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment, where he later died, according to a joint statement by Middlesbrough Fire Chief Owen Thompson, State Fire Marshal Jon Davine, and Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz.
The Middleborough Fire Department responded to the two-story home in South Middleborough around 9:15 p.m. on Monday for a report of a house fire. When firefighters arrived, they found the first floor fully engulfed in flames. Neighbors told firefighters they believed that the resident, Williams, was still in the house.
Firefighters conducted “an aggressive search” and found Williams near a side entrance. He was taken to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Officials said the cause and origin of the fire remains under investigation. A cause and manner of death will also be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
“On behalf of the entire Middleborough Fire Department, I want to express my heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones,” Thompson said in a statement.
