Woman hospitalized after car hit by commuter rail in Abington

Police said she was conscious and speaking at the scene of the crash. 

A woman was hospitalized Monday afternoon after her car was struck by a commuter rail train in Abington. 

The minivan the woman was driving was struck by a MBTA train on the Kingston Line at the Railroad Street and North Avenue crossing around 3:12 p.m., according to MBTA Transit police. The woman suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. 

Police said she was conscious and speaking at the scene of the crash. 

“Preliminarily, we have determined the safety grade crossing equipment was fully functional and operational at the time of the accident,” police said in a statement.

No injuries were reported by any passengers on the train. 

An investigation into the crash is ongoing. 

The MBTA warned commuter rail passengers Monday evening that the Kingston Line was experiencing severe delays as a result of the crash. Initially, shuttle bus service replaced trains between South Weymouth and Abington.
