A man drowned in Lower Mill Pond on Saturday, Easthampton authorities said.
The victim, 25, was kayaking in the pond, the Northwestern District Attorney said. Witnesses called emergency responders around 2:45 p.m. to report a man “in distress in the water.”
“Two people had entered the water attempting to save him but were unable to rescue him,” the statement said.
Police dive team members recovered the kayaker, and authorities said the victim, a Blandford resident, was declared dead at 5:15 p.m. The District Attorney said one other person was kayaking with the victim, and was not injured.
Easthampton first responders were at the scene, as well as the Hampden County Regional Dive Team, Massachusetts State Police Dive Team, the Massachusetts Environmental Police Boat and Recreational Vehicle Safety Bureau, and detectives from the Northwestern District Attorney’s office.
The District Attorney’s office said they do not suspect foul play. However, an investigation into the incident is ongoing, the statement said.
