Another MBTA shutdown is upon us
On the Red Line between Harvard and Broadway, beginning Nov. 17 at 8:30 p.m. through Nov. 24, shuttle buses will replace the trains.
Bostonians, it’s time again for the time-honored tradition of taking a late shuttle bus around the Boston area as more MBTA shutdowns are headed our way.
On the Red Line between Harvard and Broadway, beginning Nov. 17 at 8:30 p.m. through Nov. 24, shuttle buses will replace the trains. Critical track repairs have been cited as the reason for this closure.
And don’t get too comfortable after Nov. 24. According to a calendar on the city of Boston’s website, there are extended D and E line shutdowns planned for December as well.

The City of Boston website also hosts an image suggesting alternate routes for commuters. Although there’s no service at all between Charles/MGH and Downtown Crossing, shuttles will run to Haymarket and State, where commuters can transfer to the Orange, Green or Blue lines.
Or, heading from Harvard, there are always the 66 and 86 buses, which run through the Brighton/Allston area. Or, the 1 bus runs down Massachusetts Avenue throughout Cambridge and over the river and the 47 bus runs over the Boston University Bridge.
To compensate for this shift in service, the Commuter Rail will be fare-free between Porter Square and North Station and between Braintree and South Station.
A discount on BlueBikes will also be available during the shutdown. Riders can use the code MBTAREDNOV for five free unlocks beginning Nov. 5, and MBTAREDNOV18 for five free unlocks beginning Nov. 18.
