Firefighters knocked down a structure fire in Plymouth on Wednesday night that extended to a second building and “threatened a cluster of homes,” officials said.
Cold and windy conditions fueled the fire and came close to endangering homes near Alden Street, according to a statement from the Plymouth Fire Department, but firefighters were able to intervene, preventing it from spreading.

An unprecedented number of wildfires have burned across Massachusetts in recent weeks in large part due to a combination of weather and drought conditions.
Upon arrival just after 7 p.m., Plymouth responders encountered “heavy fire” in a two-story garage building behind 14 Alden St., the statement said. The crews immediately struck a second alarm, calling for more resources.
The fire extended to an outbuilding on the same property and started a brush fire 500 feet away, authorities said.
“The first-arriving companies made a quick decision to call for backup and having all that manpower made all the difference,” Chief Neil Foley said in the statement. “[Additional crews] were able to contain the fire to the outbuildings and avoid the occupied structures.”
About five other houses were at risk of being affected by the fire, Foley said, but they were, ultimately, not impacted.
Most of the fire was put out within an hour, the department said. There were no injuries and no one was displaced.
Firefighters from Bourne, Carver, Duxbury, and Kingston assisted the Plymouth crews.
