A Massachusetts school committee member resigned over the weekend after receiving backlash for attacking President-elect Donald Trump and his supporters on social media.
The Millbury School Committee member, Sarah Murray, allegedly posted a comment above an excerpt of a 2008 New Yorker column by David Sedaris that criticized undecided voters, according to social media posts. The comment reportedly used expletives to name-call Trump and those who support him.
“This hate cannot be tolerated in our community,” Lauri Moossa wrote about the incident in a Facebook comment. “This divisiveness and hate is not what we ought to be teaching children.”
In an email, Millbury School District Superintendent Greg Myers confirmed that “personal posts were made by a member of the Committee.”
“These posts do not represent the opinions or views of the Committee or the School District,” Myers wrote. “The Millbury School Committee is committed to representing all stakeholders in the Millbury community and holds itself and the leadership of the District to that standard.”
Myers said the member’s resignation was “tendered and accepted” on Saturday.
“It is with great sadness that I submit my formal resignation from the Millbury School Committee,” Murray wrote in an email to Myers on Nov. 9.
In Millbury, one of the Massachusetts towns with the closest election results, Trump narrowly won with 50% of the town’s vote, compared to Vice President Kamala Harris’s 49%.
Meanwhile, a high school teacher from Melrose is allegedly being investigated by school officials for his own anti-Trump post, Boston 25 reported, wishing a “Happy Veterans Day to any Vet who didn’t vote for Trump.”
“Otherwise, I hope your Veterans Day is filled with tears and PTSD,” the post allegedly said.
