DA offers explanation for burned car on Cape Cod, identifies person found dead

An investigation into the incident said the body was that of 86-year-old Susan Lauber.

Authorities on Cape Cod have identified the person whose body was found in a burned car in Sandwich on Monday.

The driver was Sandwich resident Susan Lauber, 86, Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois said in a statement.

An investigation found that Lauber drove her car into the Peter’s Pond area of Sandwich in the early morning hours on Monday. The DA said she apparently drove her car off the paved road and into a nearby wooded area.

“Due to the pitch of the wooded terrain, the vehicle came to a stop leaning on the passenger side,” the statement said. “A fire was ignited that ultimately engulfed the entire vehicle.”

Police found the car later that day, the DA said in an earlier statement. Galibois assured the public there was “no threat” to public safety.
