A fire broke out at a six-unit apartment building in Peabody early Thursday morning, displacing about 40 residents, officials say.
Around 12:05 a.m., firefighters received a call for a fire reported on the second floor of the building at 100 Main St., according to Peabody Fire Chief John Dowling.
The “heavy fire” was “stubborn” and took hours to put out, Dowling said.
“The building is a total loss,” Dowling told Boston.com. “So now it’s just trying to help all the residents out with some kind of temporary shelter and then obviously permanent shelter moving forward.”
Dowling said the department is working with the Red Cross to set up a temporary shelter for the residents.
People were exiting the building when firefighters arrived, authorities said. There were no reported injuries to residents or firefighters.
Firefighters rescued a cat from the building, Dowling said, and there were several missing animals that have since been found.
“Once the fire was knocked down, we were able to go back in there,” Dowling said. “We did find a cat, so all animals were accounted for.”
