One dead, dog rescued in Nantucket fire

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

One person died while a dog was rescued during a Tuesday night house fire on Nantucket.

According to a release from Nantucket Fire Chief Michael Cranson, dispatch received a call from a resident of 6 Green Meadows Road who reported a fire inside the house. 

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 7:30 p.m. and began a search for occupants inside the home while working to contain and extinguish the fire, the release said. 

During the search, firefighters found the resident and removed the person from the structure. First responders provided emergency medical care and transported the resident to Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

The resident did not survive, the release said. 

Firefighters also found a dog in the house. They stabilized the dog on-site and took it to Offshore Animal Hospital for further care. 

The fire was extinguished. One firefighter sustained minor injuries and received treatment. 

The Department of Fire Services, Massachusetts State Police, the Nantucket Fire Department, and the Nantucket Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire. 

The name of the person who died was not released. 

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the resident’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Cranson said in a statement. “We extend our appreciation to all first responders on Nantucket and the Massachusetts State Police for their professionalism and teamwork in handling this tragic incident.”
