Newton police are urging anyone who recently visited a convenience store in Newtonville to check their financial accounts after a credit card skimmer was found at the store’s register.
Police said the device was found inside the 7-Eleven at 612 Washington St. on Wednesday morning. The skimming device, which steals card information during a transaction, was found on the credit card reader for the store’s register.
“If you have been a customer at this location in the past few weeks, we strongly advise you to check your card card/bank card accounts for fraudulent activity,” police said.
The department said detectives are investigating the incident.
Police urged the public to be on the lookout for skimming devices, which can be both inserted into card readers or overlaid on top.
“These skimmers are hard to spot!” police said. “Whenever using a credit card reader, take a second to inspect the machine. If [it] appears at all tampered with, do not use it!”
