The Westborough Fire Department rescued a dog and four cats from a house fire early Sunday morning, which rendered the home “uninhabitable,” officials say.
At 12:54 a.m., firefighters responded to 3 Fisher St. for a report of a fire, according to a statement from the department.
At the scene, crews were met with “heavy fire showing from the house,” the statement said. Authorities said residents had already evacuated, but multiple animals remained inside.

Firefighters located the dog and four cats and brought them to safety.
“I would like to commend our crews that made a quick entry into the house to save five animals,” Chief Patrick Purcell said in the statement. “They were then able to get the fire under control in a short period of time.”
Crews conducted an “aggressive interior and exterior attack” to put out most of the fire within 15 minutes, but they remained on scene for about two hours, the department said.
Authorities determined the house to be “uninhabitable,” the statement said, and the fire is estimated to have caused about $500,000 worth of damage. The Red Cross of Massachusetts is helping the residents, officials said.
A preliminary investigation found that the fire started from a battery-operated appliance in the kitchen and dining room area, the statement said.
No one was injured in the fire, which remains under investigation.
