One of the 27 dogs surrendered by an “overwhelmed owner” to a Massachusetts animal shelter earlier this month is still looking for a forever home.
Second Chance Animal Services initially got 23 small dogs from the individual, before four more were given to the shelter a few days later. There were 14 male and 13 female dogs.
“[The owner] had a couple of dogs, and next thing you know, puppies,” Sheryl Blancato, CEO of Second Chance Animal Services, told Boston.com earlier this month. “As the story goes, it just kind of kept multiplying and so it just got out of control.”
Esmeralda, the last of the dogs to be adopted, is an 8-year-old dachshund mix battling significant medical issues, Chief Development Officer of Second Chance Animal Services Lindsay Doray told Boston.com.

Esmeralda is scheduled to have a hernia repair surgery on Wednesday, Doray said, and will also need heartworm treatment and dental surgery.
Doray said the estimated cost of Esmeralda’s medical expenses is $2,000, and is asking for donations from the public to supplement the cost.
“Lately, we are seeing a lot more medically needy pets coming our way,” she said. “Support is appreciated.”
Doray said she anticipates that Esmeralda will be available for the foster-to-adopt program, which allows the person fostering the animal to adopt them once they are cleared for adoption, early next week.
Esmeralda will be posted on the Second Chance Animal Services website as soon as she is available.
