Emergency responders in Harwich rescued a child trapped in a hole on the beach on Monday, authorities said.

Harwich firefighters said in a Facebook post they responded to Brooks Road Beach on Monday evening. There, firefighters said, they found the child sitting down in a three-foot wide three-foot deep hole, buried to the chest level.

Firefighters began to “cautiously” start to dig out the child, the post said. Emergency personnel brought in a protective tube to keep the child safe while they continued to dig.

The post said firefighters, along with Harwich police officers, dug the child out in 15 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Harwich beach rules and regulations stipulate that a child under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Violators are subject to arrest and a fine of up to $50, according to the document. It is unclear if the child was supervised when they became trapped in the hole.
