Newly graduated Mass. state trooper facing DUI charges after Tewksbury crash

James Doran, 27, was arrested Sunday night in Tewksbury.

A man who recently graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy is facing drunk driving charges after he allegedly crashed into another car Sunday night in Tewksbury, WBZ reports

James Doran, 27, is charged with operating under the influence and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, according to court records. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Tewksbury police responded to the crash on Main Street near Clark Road around 11 p.m. on Sunday night, according to WBZ. Police said the car registered to Doran driving slammed into the back of another vehicle, and responding officers reported that the 27-year-old and another man in his car were both unsteady on their feet, had slurred speech, and smelled of alcohol.

Court documents detail that Doran’s passenger initially claimed he was driving, but officers found the man’s phone on the passenger side floor, according to WBZ. Damage to the passenger side windshield also allegedly matched a cut on the man’s head.

Doran allegedly later told police he was driving and that he had had a “few drinks.” He allegedly refused a breath test and field sobriety test, according to WBZ.

Doran graduated from the police academy on Oct. 9 and was working out of the Leominster barracks, according to the station. He was in the same class as Enrique Delgado-Garcia, who died on Sept. 13 after becoming unresponsive during a training exercise.

New state troopers are on probation with the department for a year upon graduation from the academy, WBZ reports.

According to court records, Doran was arraigned Monday. He was ordered to surrender his driver’s license and will return to court in early December.
