Police are asking for the public’s help as investigators search for a driver in a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a woman crossing the street on Saturday night in Stoneham.

Officers responded to the report of the crash in the area of Spring and Pleasant streets around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, police said. At the scene, they found a woman lying in the sidewalk with serious injuries. She was treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital by ambulance.

Police said the initial investigation indicates the woman was crossing the street in the crosswalk with her granddaughter and their dog when she was struck by a speeding driver who then fled the scene.

“The woman was able to warn her granddaughter before the crash, and the granddaughter and the dog were both unharmed,” police said.

Police released a video from the crash and are asking anyone with information about the vehicle involved, a small gray or silver SUV, to contact investigators.

“The victim of this crash performed a heroic act by making sure her granddaughter was out of the way and safe,” Chief James O’Connor said in a statement. “We are committed to finding justice for the victim and her family, and we ask that the community assists us if they can.”
