An infant was abandoned outside of an apartment building in Springfield on Tuesday evening, police said.
The Springfield Police Department said they responded to an apartment building on Worthington Street around 7:45 p.m., after they received a call reporting an abandoned baby.
First responders took the baby boy, who they said is a few weeks old, to Baystate Medical Center. According to the statement, a doctor said the baby is in stable condition.
The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families oversees Baby Safe Heavens across the Commonwealth. A spokesperson for the DCF said they received a report of the incident and took “emergency custody” of the child. Due to privacy laws, the spokesperson did not provide any further information.
Massachusetts has a Safe Haven law, which allows parents to legally surrender newborn infants seven days old or younger at a designated location, like a hospital, police station, or fire station, without facing prosecution.
Police said anyone with information on the baby to call their Special Victims Unit at 413-787-6352.
If you or someone you know is considering surrendering your infant, contact 1-877-796-HOPE (4673) or 1-888-510-BABY (2229) for support.
