The family of a 14-year-old boy who died in a crash involving a boat trailer on Cape Cod has started a foundation in his honor.
On Aug. 30, John Hughan was working with his uncle on a boat trailer that became disabled from a broken axle in Yarmouth, police said. A 2020 Cadillac Escalade driven by Peter Richmond, 81, of Yarmouth Port hit the vehicle from behind, killing Hughan.
Hughan’s uncle, Cornelius Allen Bottomley, 54, of Hanover, died on Sept. 13 from injuries sustained in the crash, according to officials.
Following the crash, Hughan’s family created the John W Hughan Foundation to honor the teen’s “wonderful life and interests that will support music, athletics, and service activities for youth,” Hughan’s obituary says.
Hughan loved lacrosse and soccer and had a “natural talent for music and playing the trumpet,” the obituary says. Hughan “loved all genres of music,” and was often caught “singing and humming along to songs.”
“As his life was taken far too soon, he will be remembered for how hard he worked at everything he did, the love and kindness that emanated through him, and his compassion for his friends and family,” his obituary read.
Hughan’s family, along with members of Troop 38 in Norwell and other community members, is also planning to complete Hughan’s ongoing Eagle Scout project, an utdoor classroom at Norwell Middle School, the Cape Cod Times reported.
Following Bottomley’s death, Richmond was charged with a second count of motor vehicular homicide by negligent operation, according to a statement from the Yarmouth Police Department.
