After another shark sighting earlier this week, Crane Beach in Ipswich will remain closed to swimming to people and pets.

According to Mary Dettlof, the spokesperson for the Trustees who oversee the beach, the Ipswich harbormaster spotted sharks off Crane Beach while on patrol Monday.

So, out of an abundance of caution and after consulting with local public safety officials, the Trustees extended the beach’s swimming closure through Oct. 31.

Dettlof said that in the past, the beach has seen some avid “wild swimmers” in the open waters into the fall.

In addition, Oct. 1 marked the end of the shorebird nesting season on the beach, allowing dog walkers back onto the beach. The Trustees are urging dog owners to keep their pets out of the water, too.

However, other recreation is allowed, such as walking on the beach, hiking on the trails in the dunes, and dog walking.
