A woman has been charged in connection to a crash that injured a pedestrian and killed a dog in Bedford, New Hampshire, on Sept. 11, officials say.
That day, the Bedford Police Department was dispatched to Route 101 in the area of the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire for a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle, according to a statement from the department.
Upon arrival, police found a 37-year-old New Boston woman and her dog lying in the breakdown lane of the highway, the statement said. Both had been struck by the vehicle.
The woman was taken to a local hospital in an ambulance, authorities said, and the dog died while being transported to a local veterinary center.
Investigators determined that Bethany Belmonte, 39, of Merrimack, fell asleep while driving and drifted off the side of Route 101 when she hit the pair, police said.
Belmonte was charged with vehicular assault and negligent driving. She was booked late last month and released on personal recognizance bail, the statement said.
Belmonte is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 29 in Merrimack District Court.
