Following the Red Line track work closure from Sept. 6 to 29, the line is now back up and running.
The 24-day shutdown was set to allow the MBTA to repair 18 miles of Red Line track, improving Braintree Branch travel times by as much as 24 minutes, according to the MBTA.
The MBTA said the closure enabled the 20 speed restrictions to be removed on the Red Line — part of a large-scale initiative to eliminate slow zones.
Still, officials say riders can expect some potential issues that may arise as the line starts up again.
“Like anything else that has been shut down for the better part of three weeks [to] almost a month, I would expect, obviously, some things to pop up,” MBTA Chief Operating Officer Ryan Coholan said Sunday evening, the Boston Globe reported.
Following the closure, service for the Braintree, Quincy Adams, Quincy Center, Wollaston, and North Quincy stations is on track to speed up. The MBTA also promised a “more reliable trip with fewer unplanned service disruptions related to older tracks, older infrastructure, signal issues, or power problems.”
Although specific dates have yet to be announced, another part of the Red Line between Kendall/MIT and Central stations will be closed in November as the MBTA does more improvement work, according to MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng, the Boston Globe reported. The Red Line will be restriction free by the end of November, Eng said.
On the Orange Line, shuttle buses will replace service between Forest Hills and Back Bay/Copley on Oct. 8-11 and 15-20. On Oct. 12-14, the work will extend to North Station.
Shuttle buses will replace Orange Line service between Oak Grove and Ruggles on Oct. 26-27 and from Oak Grove to North Station from Oct. 28-Nov. 1.
On the Green Line, shuttle buses will replace service between Kenmore and Newton Highlands on Oct. 5-6 and between Riverside and Brookline Hills on Oct 19-20 on the D Branch.
