12 nurses at UMass Memorial ICU had 12 baby boys in a row

“It’s a very weird streak.”

Twelve local nurses in the same ICU unit have expanded their families with baby boys, beginning in January 2023, according to the hospital.

The odds of a group of coworkers all getting pregnant or having babies at around the same time is already seemingly a statistical anomaly. But what about the fact that they all had boys?

The latest of the 12 was born just last month, according to the UMass Memorial Medical Center Instagram post announcing this phenomenon.

“We are so thrilled for the new moms and dads on 2 Lakeside ICU,” said Nurse Manager Valerie Fernald, according to the post. “I’ve heard in the past that baby boys are more common during stressful times in the world. I think these boys are special gifts to our nurses who have worked so incredibly hard to care for our patients during the COVID-19 pandemic and every day!”

“I never had this many co-workers pregnant at the same time,” said nurse Kathryn Coreas, according to MassLive. “It’s a very weird streak.”
