N.H. teacher investigated over video with racial slur

“It shouldn’t be tolerated, whether it’s a student or a teacher,” parent Gina Morin told WHDH.

School administrators are investigating a teacher in Salem, New Hampshire, for posting a video on Facebook where she used a racist term for Black people, according to officials.

Amy Banks, a seventh-grade teacher at the Woodbury School, is on leave while the investigation takes place, according to Boston25 News

The slur did not appear to be directed at any particular individual, according to WHDH

“It shouldn’t be tolerated, whether it’s a student or a teacher,” parent Gina Morin told WHDH.

According to a school committee official, Banks hasn’t taught a class all year and was not actively working as a teacher when the video was posted.

Salem School Committee Chair Mike Carney told WHDH that Banks’ comments are completely inappropriate.

“It’s a little shocking to use a word like that,” Carney said. “There’s no place for that in today’s society.”

While parents would like more transparency from the middle school officials, the investigation is ongoing, according to Carney.

“She has rights as an employee and there’s an investigation going on,” Carney said. “Anything that comes out of this investigation will be passed on to the New Hampshire Department of Education.”
