Boater rescued from rough seas off Sagamore Beach after experiencing medical emergency

First responders transported the person to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Emergency responders helped rescue a boater stuck in rough seas off the coast of Sagamore Beach on Thursday afternoon.

According to Bourne fire Chief David Pelonzi, the Bourne Fire Department was dispatched to Sagamore Beach around 4:15 p.m. for a report of a person on a sailboat having a medical emergency. The boater had also issued a mayday call on a marine radio frequency.

Bourne fire and police crews found the sailboat anchored about 200 yards off the shore in rough seas.

The department requested assistance from the Sandwich Fire Department Marine Unit, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers patrol boat, and the U.S. Coast Guard, which responded from the Provincetown station.

Due to the sailboat’s location and challenging sea conditions, the commander requested Coast Guard helicopter assistance.

However, 15 minutes after the Corps of Engineers arrived, crews were able to rescue the boater safely. The patrol boat took the man to the Sandwich marina, where Sandwich Fire Department EMS and personnel evaluated him. They transported him to a local hospital for further treatment.

Before crews could clear the scene, the sailboat broke free from its anchor and ran aground on Sagamore Beach. Bourne officials ensured the vessel had no risk of a hazardous material release.

As of Friday morning, the Bourne Fire Department did not have an update on the boater’s injuries or why he had anchored off Sagamore Beach.
