A 28-year-old man from El Salvador, who has been charged with raping a child on Nantucket, was arrested by federal immigration authorities last week.
Bryan Daniel Aldana-Arevalo was initially arraigned in Nantucket District Court on July 26 on one count of rape of a child with a 10-year age difference and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, according to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s office of enforcement and removal (ERO) in Boston. Aldana-Arevalo was released on bail on July 29 and then arrested by immigration authorities on the island on September 10.
Immigration authorities said on Monday that Aldana-Arevalo was “unlawfully present” in the country.
“Aldana unlawfully entered the United States on an unknown date, at an unknown location, without having been inspected, admitted or paroled by a U.S. immigration official.” the agency said.
The Nantucket Current reports that Aldana-Arevalo pleaded not guilty to the charges against him during his arraignment in Nantucket District Court. He was released after his $20,000 bail was posted at the end of his July.
“Bryan Daniel Aldana-Arevalo stands accused of some detestable and disturbing crimes against a Nantucket child,” ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons said in a statement. “He represents a significant danger to the children of our Massachusetts communities. ERO Boston will not tolerate such a threat to the most vulnerable of our population. We will continue to prioritize the safety of our public by arresting and removing egregious noncitizen offenders from our New England neighborhoods.”
According to ICE, Aldana-Arevalo has been served with a notice to appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge and remains in federal custody.
