Somerville police officers and bystanders worked together Thursday to lift a car that had trapped a pedestrian. Authorities posted video of the incident online Friday afternoon.
The pedestrian became trapped under the vehicle after an accident on Broadway, police wrote on Facebook.
“Their quick, selfless actions made all the difference and saved a life. Moments like these remind us of the strong community spirit we have in Somerville,” police said in the post.
The crash occurred Thursday morning near a Gulf gas station at the intersection of Broadway and McGrath Highway, WHDH reported. The pedestrian was reportedly hit while crossing the street. He remained conscious and was speaking when first responders took him to Massachusetts General Hospital.
A spokesperson for Somerville police was not immediately available for further information Friday afternoon.
Several construction workers at a nearby property heard the commotion and rushed to help. While police arrived quickly, they asked the workers to help them lift the vehicle. It could not be dragged, and had to be lifted, because of the way the pedestrian was pinned underneath it, the station reported.
“We didn’t know if the guy was alive or anything under the car, so … everybody started looking at each other like ‘We got to move the car,’” Anderson Pacheco, one of the construction workers, told WHDH.
Police have not made any announcement about charges being filed against the driver, who reportedly stayed at the scene.
