Police found a 3-year-old child who unlocked his front door and ran into a wooded area in Ayer on Monday, police say.
Police received reports that the child was only wearing a diaper as neighbors were trying to find him, the Ayer Police Department said in a statement.
Officers could not initially locate the child, so they expanded the search and started a K-9 unit from Pepperell, the statement said.
A detective found the child after about 20 minutes, authorities said, and brought him to the command post to be reunited with his mother.
“I can’t tell you how proud I am of the men and women of the Ayer Police Department right now,” Ayer Police Chief Brian Gill said in the statement. “This is every parent’s nightmare, and our Officers were able to alleviate that fear because of their professional dedication to the safety and security of all those who live and work in Ayer.”
