14-year-old victim identified in deadly Cape Cod crash; 81-year-old charged

Two others were taken to Cape Cod Hospital.

An 81-year-old man is facing criminal charges following a crash involving a boat trailer that killed a teen and seriously injured others, police say.

Peter Richmond of Yarmouth Port, who was operating a 2020 Cadillac Escalade that hit a boat trailer, is being charged with motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, according to a statement from the Yarmouth Police Department.

At about 1 p.m. on Aug. 30, Yarmouth police received numerous calls about a person “pinned between a boat and the vehicle towing it” on North Main Street, south of the Great Western Road intersection, police said.

John Hughan, 14, of Norwell died in the crash and two others were taken to Cape Cod Hospital, officials said. Hughan was working with his uncle on the boat trailer that was disabled by a broken axle when Richmond’s vehicle hit it from behind.

Authorities said Richmond stayed at the scene of the crash and cooperated with the investigation.

“The Yarmouth Police ask the community to keep this family, their loved ones, and first responders in their thoughts,” the statement said.
