Off-duty Maine firefighter rescues swimmer on the Cape
David Tapley was on vacation with his family when he jumped into action, officials said.
A Maine firefighter who was vacationing with his family on Cape Cod over the weekend jumped into action to save a swimmer who was drowning, officials said.
David Tapley recognized the person was drowning in Wellfleet’s Dyer Pond on Saturday and pulled them from the water to the shore, according to the Wellfleet Fire Department. Tapley, who works for Kennebunk Fire-Rescue, began CPR when he saw the person didn’t have a pulse and wasn’t breathing.
By the time Wellfleet first responders arrived, the person had a pulse and was breathing and conscious, officials said. The rescued swimmer is expected to make a full recovery.

The Wellfleet Fire Department praised Tapley’s quick actions.
“His lifesaving actions and CPR led to a positive outcome in an otherwise dire situation,” the department wrote.
