A 7-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was shot Thursday evening in Providence.
Officers responded to Florence Street at about 7:30 p.m. for reports of shots fired and found the wounded girl, a Providence Police Department spokesperson said in a statement. The child is in critical condition, and detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting, according to the spokesperson.
The girl was struck by gunfire while sitting in a car with her father and younger brother, the spokesperson confirmed.
“This is an unfathomable tragedy caused by senseless gun violence,” Commander Timothy O’Hara, the department’s deputy chief of police, told WPRI. “We have a clearly innocent victim here today.”
