‘Storrowed!’: DCR gives drivers a cheeky warning ahead of Sept. 1 move-in

DCR is using horror (and humor) to keep oversized moving trucks far, far away from Storrow Drive on Sept. 1.

They’ve parodied ’80s movies, unleashed memes, and made gentle appeals set to the dulcet tones of Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.” Now, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is turning to jump scares in its ongoing mission to keep oversized moving trucks far, far away from Storrow Drive on Sept. 1.

Posted online last week, DCR’s new horror movie-style PSA warns drivers to avoid low-clearance roads like Storrow Drive, Soldiers Field Road, and Memorial Drive, lest they get “Storrowed!”

The clip is reminiscent of Eli Roth’s 2023 Massachusetts-set slasher “Thanksgiving” and features shots of several box trucks and U-Hauls that lost their roofs to low-hanging bridges. And as the narrator explains, the clip is rated “S,” as in “seriously, don’t get Storrowed.”

“Avoid the 😱 and keep your move in day a thriller, not a horror!” DCR wrote in the social media caption, tagging several Boston-area colleges.

Playful content has been a boon to the agency’s online engagement, as DCR Digital Strategist Ryan Hutton told Boston.com last year

“Even just agency-wise, people are being very receptive to this kind of open and fun form of getting across something that’s routine,” Hutton said. “We’re happy that people think at least we’re coming up with a funny way to do it.”
