North Shore jogger bit by coyote, police say

Police are asking residents to stay vigilant because the coyote may have rabies.

Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife

A coyote reportedly bit a jogger Monday evening along Brown Street on the Neck in Marblehead.

The Marblehead Police Department first received a report of a dog biting a jogger. After an investigation by Animal Control and the animal inspector, it was determined that the animal was possibly a coyote.

The police say the jogger did not have life-threatening injuries.

Marblehead police are asking residents on the Neck to be aware of and report any sightings of coyotes they may see during daylight hours for the next couple days. If the coyote was rabid, its health would decline rapidly in the next few days.

Police say rabies is rare but are urging residents to take extra precautions. It is possible this was an isolated incident in which the jogger startled the coyote.

Marblehead police, Animal Control, and the Environmental Police are monitoring the area.
