Lightning during a severe thunderstorm sparked a house fire in East Sandwich on Monday afternoon, fire officials said.
The Sandwich Fire Department responded to the report of a fire at 17 Mill Road around 12:55 p.m., according to a statement.
“The fire was due to a lighting strike during a severe thunderstorm that went through town,” the department said.
According to officials, the home’s occupants got out of the house with their dog with help from their neighbors and reported the fire. The damage from the fire was limited to the exterior of the house and electrical components inside the home.
A second home on the road sustained minor electrical damage related to the lightning strike, according to the fire department.
No one was injured.
Severe storms swept through southern New England on Monday, in some spots dropping golf ball-sized hail, according to the National Weather Service.
