A boater dies after a day out on the Whitehall Reservoir in Hopkinton

The incident appeared to be a medical emergency, officials said.

A man died following what appears to be a medical emergency while out boating on the Whitehall Reservoir in Hopkinton, officials said.

At 4:42 p.m. on Thursday, the Hopkinton Police and Fire Departments received a call to respond to Whitehall Reservoir at 300 Wood St. for a report of a distressed boater, according to a press release

Officials said another boater saw the man in distress and called 911.

First responders arrived at the reservoir and found another boater who had helped the man onto a nearby island and provided crucial care until they could reach them.

The release said that with mutual aid from Westborough firefighters, the Hopkinton Fire Department put boats into the water to reach them on the island. The District 14 Dive Team also responded.

Firefighters then took over care of the man and brought him and his family in the boat back to shore.

Fire responders took the man to a regional trauma center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Hopkinton Police Department, with assistance from the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, is continuing to investigate the incident.

The release said that since the incident appears medical in nature, additional information is not expected to be released.
