A Boston Duck Tours boat rescued an adult and child from the Charles River Monday, according to Cambridge fire officials.

The duck boat pulled two people out of the water near 40 Land Blvd., not far from the Museum of Science, the Cambridge Fire Department wrote on social media shortly after 9:30 a.m. Fire officials did not say how the adult and child ended up in the water, but noted that emergency medical crews evaluated the pair.

A Cambridge Police Department spokesperson told Boston.com that officers initially responded to the scene to assist with a report of two people in the water behind the Royal Sonesta hotel, but Massachusetts State Police took point on the incident because it happened in the river.

Citing information from fire officials, the spokesperson said a father jumped into the water after his young child fell from a walkway along the river. A nearby duck boat spotted the pair and rushed to their aid. Both father and child were taken to a Boston hospital for evaluation, the spokesperson said.

In a statement, State Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the child — who was under the age of 2 — squeezed through a railing. The incident remains under investigation, State Police said.

Boston Duck Tours did not respond to a request for comment Monday.
