A Florida woman was killed and a Boston woman seriously injured Thursday morning when the moped they were on crashed into a Jeep Wrangler on Martha’s Vineyard.
Oak Bluffs emergency personnel responded to Sea View Avenue’s “Big Bridge” at about 11:30 a.m. after reports of the crash. “Upon arrival, responding officers advised that both the operator and passenger of the moped had severe traumatic injuries requiring life-saving methods and tourniquets,” Oak Bluffs police said in a release.
The driver — Julie Harris, 41, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida — was soon pronounced dead at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Her passenger — 40-year-old Anya Fisher of Boston — was also taken to that hospital before being medflighted to a Boston hospital.
Here’s how the crash unfolded, per the police release:
Multiple witnesses told officers that the operator was traveling southeast towards Edgartown and abruptly swerved into the opposite lane. It was also reported that they were not wearing helmets. The moped then collided head on with a Jeep Wrangler traveling towards Oak Bluffs. Witnesses reported that the … Jeep was being operated safely prior to the crash. Initial investigation on scene by responding officers has not led to any citations or criminal charges against the operator of the Jeep. The moped was rented earlier in the day in Oak Bluffs and two helmets were located with the moped at the crash scene.
Massachusetts State Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
